Executive Summary

The global tech workforce is not shrinking, it is restructuring. Total US tech employment grew 1.2% in 2024 and is up 12.2% since 2021. But this aggregate growth masks a structural collapse at the bottom of the career ladder. Entry-level tech job postings have dropped more than 35% since January 2023. For roles with high AI exposure, the decline exceeds 40%.

At the same time, demand for senior and AI-skilled talent is accelerating. AI engineers averaged $206,000 in 2025, a $50,000 increase in a single year. PwC’s AI skill salary premium doubled from 25% to 56% in one year. GitHub Copilot reached 20 million users with 90% Fortune 100 adoption, writing 46% of the average user’s code.

Catalitium Interpretation

This is not a tech job crisis. It is a tech job bifurcation. The market is splitting into two tracks: AI-augmented senior roles commanding record premiums, and entry-level positions being compressed by AI productivity. The on-ramp is narrowing, not disappearing, but the timing is brutal for 2025 and 2026 graduates.

CS bachelor’s degrees more than doubled over the past decade to 112,720 in 2022–2023, the highest increase of any major, just as entry-level demand collapsed. CS graduate unemployment reached 6.1% in 2024. Series A startup team sizes dropped from 22 to 15 employees between 2022 and 2024.
